The gang has ample opportunities to eliminate both Ross and Milton, yet they never do it. Arthur has the chance to do it while he’s fishing with Jack, but we can understand not wanting to subject the child to violence. However, both agents later show up, completely unprotected, to the Van der Linde camp in order to negotiate a tr

Horizon Zero Dawn , The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and others have advanced these concepts, but Red Dead Redemption 2 tips and tricks Dead Redemption 2 presents a world of dizzying scale. It’s set across five fictitious U.S. states (New Austin and West Elizabeth from the original game, plus the all-new Ambarino, Lemoyne and New Hanover), which combine to create a world map you do not want to be constantly charging back and forth across on your horse al

The picture in the second Jack Hall Treasure Map is of the Cotorra Springs, a location to the north of the Cumberland Forest. It’s hard to miss them. The water of the springs is beautifully clear, and what looks like geysers are in the area. To the west of the springs is a strange cluster of rock pi

However, if your player decides not to beat Downes for the payment, the game kind of just implies that Arthur beat him anyway. It takes choice away from the player, and if you miss the implication, you’re left wondering why on Earth Morgan got himself

When Arthur is diagnosed with tuberculosis, one of two things can happen – either he wanders the street in a glow and sees a deer, or he wanders in a gray haze and sees a wolf. It makes sense for this to happen at this point in the story, because Arthur is a bad person and has done bad things. But by the end of the game, Arthur is repentant and has numerous discussions about the possibility of a bad man finding redemption. The story desperately wants us to take the path of honor, and it’s totally jarring if you continue to be villainous. This is the Niko Bellic morality problem all over ag

I can’t imagine what an inevitable Red Dead Redemption 3 would even be about. If the first game was about the death of the West and the second about how the West died, would a third go further back in the timeline in the early days of Dutch’s gang to depict a time of the West… close to dying? Perhaps Rockstar will try to go contemporary, maybe attempting to remake Hell or High Water about ten years too late. Regardless of what any of these plans may be, the experience of playing through Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s collage of the misunderstood is one that makes the Western a genre that I will want to take the most extended break from.

I kept thinking back to Andrew Dominik’s 2007 film The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford , which I’ve been presuming was the most prominent visual inspiration for Red Dead Redemption 2 for a few reasons. For the most overt example, look no further than the major train robbery sequence from early on in the story, and compare it to one of the first scenes in Dominik’s film . From the foreboding music, the light in-between the trees as the gang members await the train, and the point man standing on the track to stop the train, the two scenes are nearly the same beat-by-beat.

As a Western-themed title, you’d better believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 takes its horses super-seriously. So much so that you can’t fast-travel at all if your faithful steed isn’t in the vicinity. You arrive at the destination you choose riding said horse, you see, which means that they have to be there and ready for the journey

Cost aside, here’s another: while you can quickly travel from your base to your destination of choice, you can’t fast-travel from said destination back to your base. You’ll be making your own way back to the camp whatever happens, so you’d better be sure that you’ve planned out your jour

Pick the right path (literally, the right path), and continue on until you reach a small campsite. After the campsite, you’ll reach a sudden drop into nothingness. Look down and to your left. A small ledge for you to jump on is waiting for you. Go down another slope that leads from this ledge to an area below. A pile of rocks is all that is here for you. Well, a pile of rocks that hides some shiny gold bars for your trou

Red Dead Redemption 2 ticks both of these boxes. It’ll be a little while before you’re able to fast travel, and the ability to do so is hidden away. It’s so obscure, in fact, that many players stumbled upon it purely by accident. Sometimes quite late in the game, to b

Every time the black bars letterboxed the screen during Red Dead Redemption 2 , I knew that the «video game» portion of this experience was on hold. I couldn’t help but feel frustrated that Rockstar (and the game’s writers) were plopping a movie in front of me instead. It is relatively obvious that Rockstar’s recent games are meant to invoke the feelings of familiar films, but reading and hearing the thoughts from my peers had me realize that many of us—the Housers included—simply have it wrong when analyzing this game’s relationship with the Western film genre.
